How To Build A Healthy Co-parenting Relationship

If you have found yourself separated or divorced from your partner, the most important thing you can do is keep your relationship amicable for your child’s wellbeing. Co-parenting takes some careful work – it’s a relationship that takes time and effort to build, even if it means drawing up a plan and setting some ground rules. Ultimately, it is about creating a healthy and happy environment where your child can flourish with the love of both parents – and that should be non-negotiable.

Here are eight simple steps to achieving the perfect co-parenting environment:

  1. Have a schedule – From school pick up and drop-offs to extra-curricular activities, figure out who is doing what to avoid confusion. A routine is also important for your child.
  1. But be prepared to be flexible – things do not always stick to a schedule. Your child may fall ill, you may have an extra-long meeting or a working weekend. It has to be give-and-take with your partner.
  1. Plan for big days – take turns to celebrate special days with your child – be it birthdays, family holidays and special occasions.
  1. Do not shame each other – calling your ex-partner names or picking on their faults is not good for your co-parenting relationship or for your child’s wellbeing. If you have something to say to your ex-partner, reserve it for times when your child isn’t there and always remember to keep it civil for their sake.
  1. Communicate – always keep the communication channels open, be it via mobile phones, telephone lines, email or video calling. You should always be able to reach your partner and vice-versa but do not bug your child when they are with them or make them feel guilty that they are not with you.
  1. Be able to share the same space amicably – birthday parties and school events will require you both to spend time together. Make sure you show a united front for your child.

Co-parenting can be a challenging time, but if you and your partner work together, you can create a harmonious environment for your child. If you need relationship counselling to work through issues, Psylegal can help. Contact us to book in an appointment today.
