How A Mental Health Plan Can Help You Access Psychology Sessions
Reclaiming your mental well-being is now much easier with a mental health plan that allows you to access and get rebates on selected psychology sessions.
Whether it’s depressive thoughts, mood disorders or anxiety, the fear of being judged and the cost can drive those battling to cope with a mental illness away from psychologists and counsellors. But, accessing a mental health plan through your GP is showing a turn-around, with glowing testimonials from patients. In fact, more than 1.2 million Australians used mental health treatment plans in the 2016-2017 financial year.
- What exactly is a mental health plan?
Anyone with a mental health issue can have a plan drawn up by their doctor. The plan details what you and your doctor have discussed and agreed upon regarding your recovery. Your doctor can either refer you to a psychologist or an accredited mental health social worker. You also have the option to search for a psychologist that you feel you would be comfortable with – someone who is best suited to treat your mental illness.
- How does the rebate work?
If you have a mental health care plan, you will be entitled to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual or 10 group appointments with some allied mental health services in a year. After the first 6 appointments, you need to see your doctor again for a mental health plan review and another referral.
- How much will you have to pay?
Yes, you still do have to pay, but that depends on the rates your psychologist charges. Make sure you ask about this upfront. Medicare uses a set rebate rate – $124.50 for a session that is more than 50 minutes and $84.80 for a 30 to 50-minute sessions. If your psychologist charges more than that, you will have to pay from your own pocket.
